The War Is Real: Understanding Spiritual Warfare and the Armor of God
Life is full of struggle. Financial pressure, broken relationships, illness, loss. It can feel like trouble is coming from every direction. But Scripture points to something deeper going on beneath the surface of our everyday difficulties, and understanding it changes everything about how we face them.
Do You Have a Real Enemy?
A recent study by the American Worldview Inventory found that 56% of Americans believe Satan is a real spiritual being who influences human lives. That means 44% do not. But dismissing something because you cannot see it does not make it less real. You cannot see radio waves, yet no one doubts they exist.
Peter, Paul, John, and Jesus Himself all make it clear: there is a real enemy. He is not a symbol or a metaphor. He is a created being of enormous power who has turned against God and against humanity.
Satan is not alone. Scripture tells us that roughly one third of the created angels fell with him. He has an army, a hierarchy of spiritual forces working to disrupt, distract, and defeat human beings, believers and unbelievers alike.
What Ephesians 6 Teaches Us About Spiritual Warfare
The book of Ephesians builds toward this moment. Paul writes to believers who came out of a deeply pagan background. They already knew spiritual forces were real. What they needed to understand was how to stand against them.
Ephesians 6:10-12 lays it out clearly:
"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." - Ephesians 6:10-12
Seated, Walking, and Standing: Your Position in Christ
Before getting to the armor, it helps to understand the posture Paul uses throughout Ephesians to describe the Christian life.
Seated: What Is Your Position in Christ?
God raised Jesus from the dead and seated Him at His right hand, far above all rule, authority, power, and dominion (Ephesians 1:20). But Paul does not stop there. He tells believers in Ephesians 2:6 that God also raised us up and seated us with Christ in the heavenly places. Positionally, in Christ, you are seated above the very forces that come against you.
Jesus is seated because His work is finished. He has accomplished salvation. He has conquered the enemy. The enemy simply wants to pretend he has not been defeated yet.
Walking: What Is Your Practice in Christ?
Chapters four and five of Ephesians call believers to walk in a way that reflects who they are in Christ. Walk worthy of your calling. Walk no longer like an unbeliever. Walk in love. Walk as children of light. Walk wisely. The Christian life is not passive. It is an active, daily choice to live out what Christ has done.
Standing: What Is Your Power in Christ?
Now in chapter six, Paul calls believers to stand firm. Not retreat. Not run. Stand. God has already secured the territory. The believer's job is to hold the ground in the strength He provides.
How Do You Enlist in the Right Army?
The first step in spiritual warfare is being on the right side. Paul says in Ephesians 6:10 to "be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might." That phrase "in the Lord" is used 90 times in the New Testament and 13 times in Ephesians alone. Everything depends on being in Christ.
"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life." - John 3:16
"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life." - John 5:24
No soldier fights at his own expense. When you enlist, everything is provided. God's will, God's bill. The question is not just whether you are in Christ, but whether you are living like it.
What Is the Armor of God and How Do You Use It?
Paul, writing from Rome while chained to a Roman soldier, uses the image of military armor to describe the spiritual equipment God provides. Each piece represents a practical choice the believer makes.
The Belt of Truth
Choose to accept the truth of Scripture and commit to following it. Without truth, nothing else holds together. Jesus prayed for His disciples: "Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth." - John 17:17
The Breastplate of Righteousness
Choose not to harbor known sin in your life. Positionally, believers wear the righteousness of Christ. Practically, living it out matters. One of the most common reasons Christians do not share their faith is simply this: they are not living it.
The Shoes of the Gospel of Peace
Choose to trust the promises of God. Know that you know that you know you are saved, not based on your faithfulness, but on His. Roman soldiers wore cleats that kept them steady in battle. Knowing the security of your salvation keeps you steady when the enemy attacks.
The Shield of Faith
Choose to reject temptation, sin, and doubt by embracing God's Word. The Roman shield was soaked in water so that flaming arrows would be extinguished on contact. Faith works the same way. When anxiety or fear comes, the response is: "I trust You, Lord. That is a lie. I do not believe that one."
The Helmet of Salvation
Choose to rest your hope in eternity and live by the value system of the next world, not just this one. The real battle is in the mind. The helmet of salvation reminds you that this life is not all there is.
The Sword of the Spirit
Choose to accurately apply Scripture in every circumstance. "For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword." - Hebrews 4:12 This is why knowing the Bible matters. Not just having a favorite verse, but knowing enough of it to apply the right truth to the right situation.
Who Is Your Real Enemy?
Ephesians 6:12 makes this clear: the struggle is not against flesh and blood. The person in front of you is not your enemy. They may be used by your enemy, but they are not your enemy. The real enemy is the evil one and his spiritual forces.
Once you place your faith in Christ, you have declared rebellion against Satan's kingdom. You become a significant soldier in the greatest war ever fought. That is not meant to frighten you. It is meant to orient you.
A believer cannot be possessed by demonic forces, but can be oppressed. That is real. And God's answer is prayer, community, and the armor He provides.
"You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than He who is in the world." - 1 John 4:4
"Submit therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you." - James 4:7
Life Application
This week, identify one piece of the armor of God that you have been neglecting. Maybe you have been avoiding Scripture. Maybe you have been living with known sin and it has silenced your witness. Maybe you have forgotten the security of your salvation and anxiety has taken over. Pick one piece and put it on intentionally this week.
Ask yourself:
The war is real. But so is the victory. Greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. Stand firm.

- Paul calls him the tempter: "For this reason, when I could endure it no longer, I also sent to find out about your faith, for fear that the tempter might have tempted you and our labor would be in vain." - 1 Thessalonians 3:5
- John calls him a dragon and deceiver: "And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old, who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world." - Revelation 12:9
- Jesus called him a murderer and the Father of lies: "He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth because there is no truth in Him. Whenever he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own nature, for he is a liar and the Father of lies." - John 8:44
Satan is not alone. Scripture tells us that roughly one third of the created angels fell with him. He has an army, a hierarchy of spiritual forces working to disrupt, distract, and defeat human beings, believers and unbelievers alike.
What Ephesians 6 Teaches Us About Spiritual Warfare

Seated, Walking, and Standing: Your Position in Christ
Before getting to the armor, it helps to understand the posture Paul uses throughout Ephesians to describe the Christian life.
Seated: What Is Your Position in Christ?

The shield of faith extinguishes the arrows of fear and doubt before they take root. The helmet of salvation reorients your mind toward eternity, changing how you face even grief and loss. And then there is the sword. The Word of God is the only offensive weapon in the set. It requires knowing Scripture well enough to use it accurately when the moment comes. None of this armor is decorative. Each piece represents a deliberate, daily choice to trust God over your own instincts and emotions. Putting it on is an act of faith. You do not have to face today unprotected. The armor is available. The question is whether you will put it on.

But they are not. Ephesians 6:12 is one of the most clarifying verses in all of Scripture. Our struggle is not against flesh and blood. The people in your life who frustrate, wound, or oppose you are not the source of the battle. They may be caught up in it. They may even be used by the enemy. But they are not your enemy. This changes everything about how you respond. When you realize the real battle is spiritual, you stop trying to defeat people and start praying for them. You stop reacting out of anger and start engaging with compassion. You see the person in front of you not as an obstacle but as someone who also needs the grace of God. This is not weakness. It is clarity. And it is one of the most powerful things a believer can do in the middle of conflict. Identify the real enemy, and refuse to take the bait of fighting the wrong one.

Here is the most encouraging truth of this entire week: the enemy is already defeated. Christ is not still fighting. He is seated. His work is finished. The cross was not a close call. It was a complete victory. And because you are in Christ, that victory belongs to you. Yes, the battle is real. Yes, the enemy is active. Believers can be oppressed, attacked, and worn down. But there is a ceiling on what the enemy can do. He cannot possess you. He cannot separate you from God. And when you resist him, grounded in faith and clothed in the armor God has provided, Scripture promises He will flee. That is not wishful thinking. That is a promise. So do not grow weary. Do not let the weight of the battle convince you that you are losing. Keep your armor on. Stay rooted in truth. Pray for one another. And remember that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. You are not just surviving this battle. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror. Stand firm, and keep standing.

Here is the most encouraging truth of this entire week: the enemy is already defeated. Christ is not still fighting. He is seated. His work is finished. The cross was not a close call. It was a complete victory. And because you are in Christ, that victory belongs to you. Yes, the battle is real. Yes, the enemy is active. Believers can be oppressed, attacked, and worn down. But there is a ceiling on what the enemy can do. He cannot possess you. He cannot separate you from God. And when you resist him, grounded in faith and clothed in the armor God has provided, Scripture promises He will flee. That is not wishful thinking. That is a promise. So do not grow weary. Do not let the weight of the battle convince you that you are losing. Keep your armor on. Stay rooted in truth. Pray for one another. And remember that greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. You are not just surviving this battle. In Christ, you are more than a conqueror. Stand firm, and keep standing.
